Specialised short-term inpatient care at Tōtara Hospice

Key aspects of our specialised care include:

Symptom Management: We offer specialist interventions to manage pain and other distressing symptoms related to terminal illnesses, prioritising your comfort.

Palliative Rehabilitation: Our tailored rehabilitation programs, including physical and occupational therapy, aim to improve your functional abilities and well-being, helping you regain independence and prepare to go home.

End-of-Life Care: In situations where home care is no longer possible, our team provides compassionate end-of-life support, respecting your wishes and offering full support to your whānau during this time.

Admission is based on the urgency and complexity of your care needs, and our goal is to stabilise your condition so you can return home as soon as possible. All our rooms are private with ensuites, allowing us to offer specialist care and support within a homelike environment 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Psychosocial support for patients and whānau

At Tōtara Hospice, we understand that terminal illnesses impact more than just physical health, especially during inpatient care. Our Inpatient Unit is dedicated not only to managing physical symptoms but also to providing comprehensive psychosocial support to patients and their whānau during their stay with us.

Our highly trained Allied Health and Social Support Team works closely within the Inpatient Unit to address individual needs and personal concerns with compassion and expertise. They offer a range of services directly available to inpatients, including:

Counselling and Social Work: Providing emotional support and practical assistance to help patients and their whānau navigate care decisions, cope with the challenges of a life-limiting illness, and access necessary resources.

Cultural Support and Liaison: Offering guidance that respects and honours individual cultural beliefs and practices, ensuring that inpatient care is culturally appropriate and meaningful.

If you require care in our Inpatient Unit, one of our clinicians, your GP, or an Acute Palliative Care Specialist will discuss admission with you. Our focus remains on providing short-term, intensive care, with the aim of returning to the comfort of your own home whenever possible
